Kotare - New Zealand Kingfisher
I've got a pair of kingfishers that perch on a line outside my studio window, though my house is about half a mile from the sea or a river. I read in my bird guide that the Kotare will eat mice and other small animals and water creatures are only a small part of its diet. Interesting! It's a shame they don't eat possums, which are a huge threat to New Zealand's native trees and therefore also have a devastating effect on the New Zealand's native birds.
