Egret Over the Ashepoo

I'm getting ready for the Southeastern Wildlife Expo in Charleston, South Carolina in a few weeks.
I like to bring thirty to thirty-five original oils with me...so hoping I'll meet my goal this year.  I have been painting 7"x7" landscape studies for the past few years.  I've enjoyed painting them and decided to take the plunge and try the same idea in a larger piece.  This is a 20" x 20" oil on linen, based on a small study I did last year.  The photo is a little too dark - the egret have pure white highlights on them that I don't see here - but you get the idea.

A small painting for today...

When I do a painting of a landscape with birds, I paint the landscape first and let it dry for about a week - then I paint the birds.  This way, if I don't like the birds, I can wipe them off and start again.  This is a 7" x 7" oil inspired by the marshes that I see on the East Coast of the U.S.   The ducks are pintail.

Untitled as of yet...

Look, Up in the Sky!

I spent the day doing paperwork for the New Zealand Painting Holiday that I'm leading with Joe Garcia (February 2012) - then an interruption to deal with a house/handyman issue left little time in the day to paint.  So with only an hour or two left before quitting time, I painted this little raven.  It's been a while since I've done one.  I got off to a bad start and wiped two off before I got back in the swing of things.  It is titled, 'Look, Up in the Sky'!  as the raven looks like it is tracking something above it - perhaps another bird.

I painted this raven from three different reference photos.  One of the photos had a red car in the background....which inspired the background color.

"Golden Slumber"

This is a 12" x 16" oil done on 2" deep Ampersand cradleboard - a contemporary look that doesn't need a frame...but can be framed if preferred.  This painting can be seen at The Walt Horton Fine Art Gallery in Beaver Creek, Colorado.

The Road Home

It's been difficult to get back to work after the holidays but finally, I'm back into the swing of things.
Now I'm busy painting for the next show, The Southeastern Wildlife Expo, mid February in Charleston, South Carolina.

This piece is of a road south of Charleston in the Ace Basin area - and yes, there is a bird in it...that dot of red over the road is a cardinal.

Shane's Project for 2011

My son, Shane Rebenschied, (brilliant illustrator and author - www.blot.com)  has started a new painting project for 2011.  He will paint one painting, in one hour, each day of 2011.   He has a timer taped to his easel - when it says the hour is up, he stops painting.  This is really a good way to stop yourself from 'noodling' - I might have to give it a try.   Shane's project is off to a late start as the hard drive on his computer died on New Year's Eve.  As he's a digital illustrator, he's spent the last three days retrieving illustration projects.

I love his first piece.  He's painting them all the same size - 7" x  7  and he's selling them ALL unframed for $50 each plus shipping.  What a deal!  If you'd like to purchase the painting or follow his daily progress go to his website, www.1by1by1.com    There's a link on his website for a source for 7" x 7" frames.

"Cold Embrace"

This oil was in 2009 Birds in Art at The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum.  It then toured the U.S. for a year.   The size is 20" x 16" on Ampersand gessoed board.  It can be seen at The Walt Horton Fine Art Gallery in Beaver Creek, Colorado.
