Two pieces for today

Shane and I both have one 5" x 7" oil for today for the 75 for $75 project.  This is actually Shane's painting for yesterday.  Today, Shane and Marla are celebrating their wedding anniversary, so he won't be painting today!

Wow!  I'm really impressed with the progression Shane is making in his landscapes.  But as he's been a digital artist for many years, he's just changing his medium.  You can see his commercial illustrations at http://www.blot.com/

My painting for today is an Anna's Hummingbird.  Do you know how to tell the difference, at a distance, between an Anna's  and a Broad-tailed hummingbird?  Besides the obvious red head on the male Anna's - you can tell by the sound.  A broad-tailed hummingbird makes a metallic buzz when it flies and the Anna's flight is quiet.

We've now done 45 paintings since May 15th for our 75 for $75 project.  Why are we doing the project?  Shane wanted to get back into oil painting and I wanted to get really good at painting little bird studies with a more painterly approach.  And what better way to get better at something than to do it 10,000 times?  As Shane said, 12 down - 9,988 to go!

Gambel's Quail for 75 for $75

Today's painting is a Gambel's quail....one of my favorite birds.  Years ago, I raised five Gambel's quail from day-old chicks.  Cute but not very smart.

If you'd like to see the rest of my bird studies or my son's landscapes in our one-month long 75 for $75
project,  click here to go to the 75 for $75 page on my website.

Shane is going to try to get a painting done today - if so, I'll post it later this evening.

Today's paintings -

My painting for today is a roadrunner.  5" x 7" oil on Ampersand gesso board.  We've now done 42 paintings for our  75 for $75 project.  Thirty-three to go!

Shane painted a nice little 5" x 7" landscape titled 'Green on Green on Green'.   How does he come up with his titles?   But better a thought-provoking title than the rather ordinary 'Misty Morning'.  I think every artist has used 'Misty Morning' more than once.

A little killdeer and a landscape for today...

I spent half the day running around doing errands (and mailing out paintings to some of you whose paintings were dry enough to ship) and the rest of the day was spent trying to do a painterly owl without noodling it to death.  I squinted so much this afternoon that the corners of my eyes hurt.  I finally turped out the owl and painted a kildeer for today's 75 for $75 painting.

I've been trying to decide if my killdeer needs feet.  I'll decide tonight.  It would be so much easier to bury feet this little guy's feet in the sand.  I find that when in doubt, wait until the next day.

Again, to see the rest of the paintings in our 75 for $75, click on this link to take you to the 75 for $75 page on my website.

Another chicken!

Today's painting for 75 for $75 is another chicken.   I'm keeping this brief as my son and his family will be here for dinner any minute!

Shane's painting for yesterday #37

Shortly after I posted my piece for yesterday's 75 for $75, Shane called to report that he just finished his piece...but it was already too dark to photograph it, so he sent me his image this morning  Officially #37!  We're now halfway to our goal of 75 paintings by June 15th.  To see all of the 37 paintings, go to the 75 for $75 page on my website by clicking on the link.   As a reminder, the paintings we're doing this month for our 75 for $75 project are all 5" x 7" oil on panel, unframed.  There is an additional charge of $5 for mailing.  Paintings will be mailed once they're dry and varnished.  It usually takes a week, sometimes more, to be dry enough to ship, then they'll be sent through the post office, first class mail.

I've explained the project in earlier posts, but will explain it again in case you missed it.  My goal in doing 75 for $75 is to get better at spontaneous bird studies.  I want to get more painterly in my work - and since switching from watercolor to oil four years ago, I've had a struggle painting birds without rendering them to death.   As I don't supply my galleries with bird studies, this online project doesn't compete with the eight galleries that carry my work.

I'm doing the 75 for $75 project with my son, Shane, who is a commercial illustrator.  He does book covers for the major publishers.  You can see his commercial work at www.blot.com.  As his illustrations are digital, he decided to join me in this project as an opportunity to get back into oil painting.  Shane graduated from Art Center College of Design as an illustration major in 1998.

For today - a mourning dove

I'm back in the studio trying to make up for lost time.  Today's 5" x 7" oil is a mourning dove.  Painting this piece reminded me why I like Ampersand gesso board so much.   It's such a nice surface to work on.  And no - I'm not paid by Ampersand to say nice things about their product!

I doubt that Shane will be contributing any pieces in the next week...though he's trying.  He's suddenly flooded with real work (freelance illustrator). It's Murphy's Law....his illustration jobs have been slow to come these past few months but as soon as he made a committment to contribute to this project, his freelance work picked up.  It figures!
